Building on our successful sponsorships of The Lion King and the FIFA 2010 SPACE art exhibition, Telkom is helping to bring another internationally acclaimed theatre production to South Africa. The Phantom of the Opera, which will open for local audiences on 22 November 2011, has played to more than 100 million people in 149 cities around the world.
"Telkom has a history of supporting the arts. Following in the footsteps of the highly successful partnership with The Lion King, we are delighted to once again be a partner in bringing an award-winning theatre production to South Africa," says Brenda Kali, Group Executive: Group Communication and Brand.
The Phantom of the Opera, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is now in its 23rd year on Broadway, making it the longest-running musical ever to be staged there. The South African production of the show will play at Cape Town's Artscape Theatre from 22 November 2011 to 15 January 2012. It will then move to The Teatro at Montecasino in Johannesburg, where it will open on 31 January 2011.
The production is being brought to South Africa by Telkom in partnership with Pieter Toerien and the Really Useful Group. Pieter Toerien co-directed the South African production of The Lion King, staged in 2006, which Telkom also supported.
The Phantom of the Opera, which has won over 50 international awards, is billed as the most popular musical of all time. It features songs such as 'Music of the Night' and 'All I Ask of You', which have topped the charts in a number of countries.
